Catching Dropped Words in AI Voiceover: Transcribe It Back and Diff Against the Script

I voiced a 5-minute explainer with an AI clone of my own voice. Out of 1,368 characters, 20 were dropped, and one line meaning "give nothing at all" came out as "give everything". Your ears miss it because you already know the script and fill the gaps. Here is a check that takes about 30 minutes to set up and a few minutes per video after that.

What This Note Gives You

A way to check whether your AI voiceover silently skipped words. First-time setup is about 30 minutes; after that, a few minutes per video.

One Core Idea

Your ears can’t catch dropped words because the script is in your head and fills the gaps. A speech-to-text tool that has never seen the script writes only what it hears, so missing words have nowhere to hide.

My test: in a long video, 1,368 Chinese characters with 20 confirmed drops, and 24 of 40 lines had problems.

How To Do It

Step 1 | One file per line

One sentence per line in the script, one audio file per sentence, with matching numbers (01.mp3 is line 1). One big file works too, but finding the bad line is harder.

Step 2 | Pick two transcription tools

There are many free speech-to-text tools. Pick two different ones (or a large and a small model from the same tool). If you don’t know how to install them, ask an AI:

I'm a beginner on Windows (or Mac). I want to transcribe Chinese audio files to text on my own computer, processing a whole folder at once. Recommend two free tools that work offline, and walk me through installing and using them step by step, telling me exactly what to click or type.

Step 3 | Don’t give the tools the script

Many tools accept a “prompt text” to improve accuracy, but it makes them fill in the missing words. When checking for drops, never provide it.

Step 4 | Diff word by word

Put the script and both transcripts side by side. Doing it by hand is tiring, so ask an AI:

Below are three columns: script, transcript A, transcript B, one sentence per row. Compare them character by character and list every character that is in the script but missing from both A and B, with the sentence it's in. Don't count homophones or different number formats (thirty-two vs 32).

Step 5 | Decide

A word counts as dropped only when both tools missed it. If only one missed it, go listen to that line yourself.

Step 6 | Fix

Find the cause first, then decide what to change (see the pitfalls below). After fixing, rerun Steps 2–5 and confirm the count actually went down.

Pitfalls You Will Hit

  1. The transcription tools make mistakes too: accents, homophones and proper nouns are often written wrong. That is why a drop needs both tools to miss it; otherwise you will rewrite lines to fix problems that don’t exist.
  2. Rewording around hard words only treats the symptom: I first rewrote a dozen lines to avoid tricky characters and still had 20 drops. The real cause: the voice tool converted characters with multiple readings into pinyin, neighboring characters fused into a long pinyin run, and the model swallowed words in long runs. Converting only characters whose reading really differs, and generating each line twice to keep the better take, took drops from 20 to 0. Your tool may have a different cause, but the rule is the same: find the cause first.
  3. You changed the voice, but got the old one back: some tools cache results by “same sentence, same voice name”. Swap in a new voice sample under the same name and it returns the old voice, and the transcription check still passes. After changing a voice, clear the cache or change a setting so it regenerates.

When You Get Stuck, Ask an AI

Paste this into Claude or ChatGPT, fill in your situation, and paste the full error message verbatim:

I'm a beginner doing an "AI voiceover dropped-word check". I'm using [OS] and [tool name]. At [step], I got the error below. Walk me through fixing it step by step, telling me exactly what to click or type:
[paste the full error message]

One-Line Summary

After the voiceover is done, let an ear that never saw the script listen again; when you find drops, find the cause before rewriting.
