GPU Stuck at 100% With No Progress: Clean the Leftovers Before You Restart

GPU at 100% does not mean the task is alive. Many freezes happen because the previous step never returned its VRAM cleanly and the next step cannot get a contiguous block. Restarting is the most expensive fix; clear just that segment first.

The one idea that matters

“GPU usage 100%” does not mean the task is still alive. Many freezes look like this: a step finishes but does not hand its VRAM back cleanly (the jargon is “fragmentation”). The next step asks for one large contiguous block, cannot get it, and sits there. Because some compute is still running at the moment of the freeze, the monitor still shows full load.

Most people’s first instinct is “not enough resources, restart.” But a restart is the most expensive fix, because every model has to be reloaded. What to do first is a partial cleanup: clear only what the previous step left behind and leave everything that is working alone.

Steps

Step 1: Confirm it is really frozen, not just slow

Open a GPU monitor (Task Manager’s Performance tab on Windows, or nvidia-smi) and watch for 30 to 60 seconds:

  • VRAM and utilization keep jittering slightly: it is still computing. Wait.
  • The numbers are completely frozen and the task progress bar is not moving either: that is a real freeze. Go to the next step.

Step 2: Check whether your framework has a “clear cache” or “unload models” function

Names differ, the idea is the same. PyTorch has torch.cuda.empty_cache() underneath. Node-based tools like ComfyUI usually have ready-made “cleanup / unload” nodes in an extension pack that you can drag onto the canvas without writing code.

If you are not sure whether yours has one, paste this to an AI assistant (swap in your tool name):

I am using [your tool]. It froze halfway: the GPU still shows full load but progress has not changed. Does this framework have a function or feature that clears the GPU cache or unloads models? How do I add it to my workflow? Walk me through it step by step, I am a beginner.

Step 3: Insert the cleanup between the two steps most likely to cause trouble

Position is the whole trick. The cleanup must sit between “the step that may leave residue” and “the next step”, as a gate that forces the flow to finish cleaning before it moves on. Clearing once at the very start leaves the mid-pipeline residue untouched.

Step 4: Run it once and compare total time before and after

With the cleanup in, the task should stop freezing and total time should not grow noticeably (the cleanup itself usually takes seconds). If it still freezes, or gets much slower, the cause is probably not fragmentation. Look elsewhere: truly insufficient memory, or another program competing for the GPU.

Traps you will hit

  1. Assuming “clear cache” fixes every freeze. It fixes one cause only: resources that were never returned. If the task stops freezing but the output has a different problem, that is a separate issue. Debug them apart and verify one variable at a time.
  2. Putting the cleanup in the wrong place, which is the same as not having it. If the cleanup node is not on the data path (the next step must wait for it), the framework may treat it as unrelated and skip it or run it early. Make sure its output is actually consumed by the next step, even if it only passes the data through unchanged.
  3. Testing once and calling it fixed. Freezes often depend on how long and how many rounds you ran. Run at least 2 or 3 rounds, or change the input and test again.

Takeaway

When a GPU freezes, first assume “the last round did not clean up”, not “this machine is too weak”. Most frameworks ship a cleanup function. Inserted mid-pipeline as a gate, it is usually far cheaper than a full restart.

Universal rescue: how to ask an AI when you are stuck

I am using [tool / framework, with version if known] to achieve [goal]. I am stuck at this step: [describe the exact action]. The error or odd behavior is: [paste the full error, or describe “no error, but progress behaves like this”]. I have already tried: [list]. Please: 1) first judge the likely root cause, and do not rush to give code; 2) once the cause is confirmed, teach me how to fix it step by step, assuming I am a beginner.

The point is “cause first, steps second”. Asking for code directly often returns something that runs but does not fix the underlying problem.
